The Big Red Horse
On March 30, 1970 a wobbly foal was born on a farm in Virginia. The young Secretariat loved to run and play, just like all the other colts and fillies. But Secretariat was no ordinary horse.A handsome chestnut colour, he was bigger and more muscled than most racehorses his age. Many people took notice and believed he was destined for greatness. At first he disappointed. On the track he seemed lazy and he was so slow some called him Ol' Hopalong. An entire team worked with Secretariat as he trained at the racetrack. But the person who helped Secretariat the most - freeding him grain, bathing him and chatting with him at dawn each day - was Edward "Shorty" Sweat.
