Product Overview

Tom Gibons is still a pupil at Rye Grammer School when the story begins, but is already helping his father in the smuggling activities.

The author gives revealing glimpses of what it was like to live on the farms and in the small towns near the Sussex coast at this period, when smugglers or "free traders", as they are prefered to call themselves, as they influenced the region so powerfully, that no one dared oppose them.

Schoolmaster Lorwerth Lewis becomes a Riding Officer (for the Customs house) and by his guile, determination and bravery eventually brings about the destruction of the smugglers in a fierce encounter with Dragoons.
