'THE CUP' - MOVIE UPDATE
4 Jul 2010
After seven years of work by iconic Australian director Simon Wincer and author Eric O'Keefe, the new Australian movie "The Cup" has finally begun filming.
The story is based on Damian Olivers' 2002 Melbourne Cup win on Media Puzzle after the dramatic death of his brother only one week before the big race.
The 17.5 million dollars finance needed to make the film was approved in 2008 with the film's release to be just before this year's 150th anniversary Melbourne Cup running, however the global financial crisis meant that a lot of the investors had to be replaced.
With a reduced budget of 15 million dollars, filming is now underway with an all-star cast together with 55 purpose-trained thoroughbreds.
To the best of my knowledge the cast is as follows;
Brendan Gleeson ... Dermot Weld Alice Parkinson ... Jenny Freedman Tom Burlinson ... Dave Phillips Bill Hunter ... Bart Cummings Jodi Gordon ... Trish Oliver Rodger Corser Stephen Curry ... Damien Oliver Daniel MacPherson ... Jason Oliver Lewis Fitz-Gerald Martin Sacks Shaun Micallef ... Lee Freedman Jared Daperis Andrew Curry Colleen Hewett Harli Ames ... Saeed Bin Suroor
The film is now set for release in Easter 2011.
PS I love the poster! It's an absolute beauty isn't it!
